What this means for parents
Measles is highly contagious. One infected person can spread it to up to 18 others. Infants too young for routine vaccination and people with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe complications, including pneumonia, encephalitis, and death.
Practical steps for households today
- Check MMR status for everyone in the household. Two doses are ~97% effective. Contact your clinic or pharmacy for catch-up doses if anyone is behind.
- Ask about an early dose for infants 6–11 months if you live in or travel to an area with active transmission (especially Pennsylvania counties with ongoing spread). Discuss with your pediatrician.
- Know the symptoms: fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, followed by a characteristic rash starting at the head and moving down. Isolate and call ahead before going to clinic if measles is suspected.
- Review other protections: Ensure household members are up to date on flu and COVID vaccines; ask about RSV protection (maternal vaccine or nirsevimab) for eligible infants.
- Watch for other recalls: Continue checking lot numbers on any remaining Babies’ Magic Tea gripe water (lot 25122bw) and discard if present.
