As of October 15, the CDC reports 4,410 confirmed measles cases in the United States for 2026 — up 330 cases in one week, an 8% increase. This is the highest annual total since 1991. Pennsylvania remains the epicenter, with 1,260 cases across 43 counties, 238 hospitalizations, and five confirmed measles-associated deaths (a sixth is under investigation).
The CDC is deploying an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) “disease detective” to Pennsylvania this week under the Epi-Aid program to support the state’s response. Pennsylvania has requested the assistance and notes ongoing differences in how measles-associated deaths are counted at the federal versus state level.
Practical steps for parents
- Check household MMR status. Infants under 12 months are especially vulnerable; talk with your clinic about early dosing if you are in or near an outbreak area.
- Watch for rash, fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. Measles is highly contagious before the rash appears.
- If you or your child may have been exposed, call your clinic or health department before walking in.
- Keep checking pantries for the Babies’ Magic Tea gripe-water lot (25122bw, best before 12/2028) that contained undeclared alcohols, and for any remaining Nara Organics formula (long shelf life).
Hospitalizations nationwide stand at 451. About 96% of cases are among people who are unvaccinated or of unknown vaccination status. Children and teens aged 5–19 account for the largest share of cases.
