Parent briefing — 17 October 2026
CDC reported 4,410 confirmed measles cases nationwide as of 15 October, up 330 from the prior weekly update. Pennsylvania continues as the epicenter with approximately 1,260 cases and 238 hospitalizations as of mid-October. Five measles-related deaths have been reported by the state; CDC has confirmed two associated deaths this year without naming states. A sixth death remains under review in Pennsylvania.
What this means for your household
- Infants under 12 months cannot receive MMR yet. Protect them by ensuring everyone else in the house who is eligible is up to date.
- If you are traveling or live near an outbreak area, ask your clinic about an early MMR dose for babies 6–11 months (it does not count as a routine dose).
- Check your own records and those of older children. Two doses of MMR are about 97% effective.
- Watch for fever, cough, runny nose, and the characteristic rash. Call ahead before seeking care so clinics can isolate.
Leftover action items
- Still check any gripe-water bottles against the recent alcohol-related lot recall.
- Formula households: confirm no ByHeart or Nara Organics product remains in the pantry from earlier botulism investigations.
