Parent Briefing — 18 October 2026
As of mid-October 2026, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports 4,410 confirmed measles cases nationwide. Pennsylvania’s Department of Health has confirmed 1,260 cases across 43 counties as of 16 October, with 238 hospitalizations and five confirmed measles-associated deaths. A sixth death in Franklin County remains under investigation.
What parents can do today
- Check household MMR status. Two doses are the routine schedule (12–15 months and 4–6 years). Infants 6–11 months in counties with ongoing transmission may be candidates for an early dose; ask your clinic.
- Know the symptoms: high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, then a rash that starts at the hairline and spreads. Call ahead before visiting care if you suspect measles so staff can arrange isolation.
- Protect the unvaccinated: keep unvaccinated infants and children away from known exposure settings when possible. Measles is highly contagious before the rash appears.
- Pop-up clinics: Pennsylvania has administered thousands of MMR doses at community clinics. Check the state dashboard or your local health department for upcoming clinics.
- Other reminders: continue routine well-child care. If you use gripe water or other supplements, verify lots against any active recalls. Respiratory season is here—discuss flu, RSV antibody, and COVID options with your clinician using current independent evidence.
