New study on COVID-19 vaccination in pregnancy and child development

A multicenter study published today in JAMA Pediatrics found no meaningful difference in neurodevelopmental scores at 18–30 months between children whose mothers received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine during or just before pregnancy and those whose mothers did not. Scores on the Ages and Stages Questionnaire were equivalent. The findings support continued recommendations for vaccination in pregnancy to protect against severe COVID-19. Decisions remain individual and should be discussed with a clinician.

Early flu season and pediatric deaths

CDC FluView for the week ending 24 October confirmed the first influenza-associated pediatric death of the 2026–27 season (H1N1, occurring the week ending 10 October). Activity is rising earlier than usual. Local reports include an infant death in San Bernardino County (too young for vaccine, underlying conditions) and pediatric deaths in San Diego County. Everyone 6 months and older is recommended to receive this year’s flu vaccine. Infants under 6 months rely on maternal vaccination and cocooning.

Ongoing measles situation

U.S. measles cases remain elevated (recent figures near 4,850). Pennsylvania continues to report high numbers, with attention on vaccination coverage in some communities including Amish populations. Early MMR doses for infants 6–11 months are being used in outbreak areas; those infants still need the routine two-dose series later.

Product checks still active

The Once Upon a Farm Tractor Wheels toddler bars recall (choking hazard from sticky mass) remains in effect for all lots. Parents should check pantries and discard affected products. Other recent CPSC notices on nursing pillows, sensory swings, and certain magnetic toys continue to apply.

What parents can do this week

  1. Confirm household flu and RSV protection status (maternal vaccine or nirsevimab for infants).
  2. Check MMR status for everyone in the home, especially if pregnant or planning pregnancy.
  3. Review product registration emails and CPSC/FDA recall lists for recent toddler snacks and gear.
  4. For any fever or breathing difficulty in an infant, contact a clinician promptly.
